HOMEROOM: Happy Halloween!!!  Thanks to all who participated in Red Ribbon Week!

SOCIAL STUDIES

CW: Oceania quiz and turn in Oceania two-column notes and Oceania questions.

        Discussion of Election 2008 packet - Important issues

HW: Election Scavenger Hunt. Remember this handout is geared toward finding information from a newspaper. Look for an article related to the Nov. 4 election, although it can be about any political race or issue -- not just the president. The second side of the handout asks you to investigate information found on an editorial page. We discussed in class that the editorial page is also referred to as the Opinion page. Find out what you can!! If you have questions or can't find a certain question, leave it blank and we'll discuss on Monday.

SCIENCE

CW: Layers of Earth/Plate Tectonics pretest - turned in at the end of class.

       Layers of the Earth brainstorm sentences. You must have 5 sentences completed for Monday.

HW: Finish Layers of the Earth brainstorm sentences.

HOMEROOM: Tomorrow is Red Day for Red Ribbon Week!

SOCIAL STUDIES

CW: Mock election in computer lab. This mock voting simulation was recommended by Cobb County. Remember it goes back to that Government/Civics strand of Social Studies. We have the RIGHT to vote, and the RESPONSIBILITY to be an informed voter and to vote!!

        Review of Oceania questions homework.

HW: none. Remember Oceania settlement quiz tomorrow. Use that study guide!!

SCIENCE

CW: Handed back Weathering and Erosion test. Highest score was a 104 (all questions correct and two Bonus questions correct). Awesome!! Discussion of scoring and questions.

       Those that scored 87 and higher watched a Bill Nye video! Congratulations on great scores!!

       Those that scored 86 or below discussed test questions/concepts. We talked about test-taking strategies as well. You were asked to make corrections to incorrect test questions. You must have the correct answer and the page number where the correct answer is explained. The three short answer questions need to be rewritten (no page numbers necessary). Remember if there isn't a page number, there isn't credit given for the correction.

        Corrections are credited up to 10 points. This will be added to your original test score. Corrected test grades will not exceed 87.

       If you were absent for test corrections today, you will have an opportunity to make corrections (those that scored below 87).

       Oceania questions - complete the 4 questions at the top of the information handout. You may complete the questions on the back of the handout or on a separate piece of notebook paper.

*** Quiz Thursday on Oceania settlement!! I will not be here tomorrow as it is a Science planning day. You will complete an activity on Election 2008.

SCIENCE

CW: Soil conservation packets with a partner. 2nd hour took packets home to complete. 3rd hour must complete the textbook portion of the packet at home. 4th hour turned in the packet at the end of class.

Remember the five conservation methods discussed in the textbook are 1. contour plowing  2. terracing  3. no-till farming  4. cover crop  5. crop rotation

HW: Complete soil conservation packets as necessary (2nd and 3rd periods)

Tomorrow you will work on the story "The Night the Town Disappeared"

        Read Chapter 10, Section 3: From Bedrock to Soil.

        Make an acrosstik (not sure how to spell that one!) puzzle from the letters in "From Bedrock to Soil" (like the model shown in class). Each letter should be part of a description/phrase about soil from the reading. You may go into the section on Soil Conservation if you get stuck!

       OPTIONAL PUZZLE: Complete the four new "Weathering Wordy Numbers" provided by your peers in 4th period. Remember to earn the 2 Stellar Dollars you must provide the correct word AND create a hint for that word.

CW: Popcorn and Presentations! All presenters did a great job today. Hopefully you used the information to add to your knowledge of explorations. Today should have been treated as another test review! Females brought back the greatest number of signed study guides -- they'll get a prize on Monday (remind me please on Monday!)

HW: Study for Explorers test on Monday. All of the concepts covered on the test are also covered on the study guide. Textbook pages to look over: pages 307-311. Think back to the illustrated time line, the explorers video, the power point presentations. You can also look back on any of the links that we used to research the explorers (scroll back through the blog entries.) Remember, we're looking for big picture happenings and achievements.

CW: Gravity Erosion: Mass Movement skits.  We saw some great, informative skits in Science!

HW: Study for Weathering and Erosion test on Monday!  Review Chapters 10 and 12 for topics! You need to know what weathering and erosion are, what they do. Types of weathering (chemical and mechanical), examples of mechanical and chemical weathering, effects of weathering. Types of erosional factors. How erosion and deposition are related. Effects of wind erosion. Effects of glacial erosion. Landforms created by glaciers, types of glaciers, types of mass movements, effects of mass movements on Earth's surface.
