BUDDY PICTURES!  If you would like to be in a buddy picture, they will be taken Feb. 2nd in room 731.  You can be in a maximum of 2 groups.  Groups may only be up to 5 students of the same grade level.  (You may take a picture with your sister or brother from LMMS if you want as one of your pictures.) I will give a free homework pass or extra credit grade to my math students or enrichment students who come and participate in the 4 rotations.  You must come by room 607 (Mr. Mulkey's room) to collect your pass or credit at 8:15.

Math:  We reviewed our basic customary conversions and wrote down ways to remember them.  Please start MEMORIZING these tonight.  You will need to know them for your quiz next Tuesday.

We checked our measurement to the closest fraction of an inch and turned in our Measure for Pleasure sheet. 

We wrote down the 5 steps to convert in customary measurement as well as 2 rhymes that will help us.  We began practicing from chapter 9, lesson 3.

Unit 5 Tests were given back and reviewed.

Math: Our MMM this week is simplifying  fractions. Today we learned how to measure to the 1/2,1/4,1/8,1/16 of an inch.  Remember that 1/16 is every little line between inches. 1/4 is every 4 lines, 1/2 is every 8 lines and 1/8 is every 2 lines. Rotational symmetry performance tasks were turned in.  If you did not turn it in, it is 10 points off tomorrow and then it drops to a 60%.

HW:  Finish BOTH measurement activities (do not do the "bike" side), print the Unit 6 parent letter and read and keep in your binder

Enrichment:  We checked our factors and multiples worksheet.  We made a flapbook for our study strategy this week and used it to define our vocabulary words on Rational Numbers.

Math:  Students took the Unit 5 Test on Symmetry and then worked on their rotational symmetry performance task.

HW:  Rotational symmetry performance task is due Monday ( please follow your guidelines and then attach it to the back)

Enrichment:  We checked our prime factorization from yesterday.  We played 4 in a Row to identify factors and multiples as well as perfect squares.  We took our Vocabulary quiz on Number Theory. We took our Computation challenge quiz on multiplying and dividing whole numbers (2 and 3 digit).

Math:  We reviewed for the Unit 5 Symmetry Test.

We began preliminary work on measurement for Unit 6 Scale Factor by determining the fraction of an inch (1/2,1/4,1/8,1/16).

HW:  If your class was able to begin the measurement worksheet, bring it back tomorrow or Monday to finish it.  If your class did not get to this worksheet, you will get it on Monday to complete. Bring back your Rotational Symmetry Performance Task to work on in class after the Unit 5 Test tomorrow.  Study chapter 8, lessons 10 and 11, keeper notes #30 and 31, your study guide and Hook book to prepare for the Unit 5 Test on Friday.

Enrichment:  We checked our exponent sheet.  We completed our CC skill on multiplying and dividing multiple digit whole numbers.  Today's focus was prime factorization.

HW:  Finish your prime factorization sheet, study your vocabulary flashcards - quiz tomorrow, CC quiz tomorrow.  Homework  in enrichment is usually studying vocabulary,reading for your log and finishing classwork. DUE TO THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT DID NOT FINISH THE EXPONENT SHEET LAST NIGHT, ALL FUTURE ASSIGNMENTS WILL DROP TO A 50% IF NOT COMPLETED BY THE NEXT DAY. (You may turn in your exponent sheet tomorrow for 10% off, but this will be the last time this will be the deduction.)

Math:  Students had to determine the degree or angle of rotation in our warm-up.  After checking Line symmetry HP and PS p. 74, students learned how to create line symmetry.

HW:  Unit 5 Test is Friday on Symmetry.  Please study chapter 8, lessons 10-11, keeper notes 30-31,  and your study guide.  Bring back your rotational symmetry performance task on Friday to work on after you finish your test.  It is due on Monday.

Math: Today we reviewed regular polygons and their lines of symmetry.  We also reviewed vocabulary from this unit.  Please study your keeper notes #30 and 31 and chapter 8 lessons 10 and 11.

We checked our study guide and our line symmetry assignment from yesterday.

Our focus today was rotational symmetry.  We had to determine if a figure, design or letter had rotational symmetry and what the degree or angle of rotation would be.  A figure has rotational symmetry if it can be rotated less than 360 degrees and look like its original.  To determine the angle of rotation, you would divide 360 by how many times the design repeats or the number of points it has or looking at how far you turned it until it matched the original.

HW:  Unit 5 Test on Symmetry is Friday, study your keeper and chapter 8, lessons 10 and 11, Complete HP and PS p. 74

Enrichment:  Our computation challenge skill this week is long multiplication and division of whole numbers.  Our topic today was prime and composite numbers to go with Number Theory.

Math:  We did our MMM today on simplifying fractions.  Please practice so that you can complete 40 out of 50 this quarter. Name symmetry activities and p.466 from the book were due today.  If you did not turn these assignments in, they will be graded as classwork assignments.  Please turn them in tomorrow for 10 points off.  We reviewed our Unit 3B test and continued to work on percent of a number as our main focus.  If you have specific questions about the test, please see me any day during homeroom. 

Today our focus was on line symmetry again.  I gave hints of covering the figure partially with your hand or a card as well as physically rotating your book or figure on your desk to see if the figure has line symmetry.  Keeper notes were given.  Students began practicing on a worksheet for line symmetry.

HW:  Finish your classwork activity on line symmetry (be sure to draw and tell lines of symmetry), complete your study guide (use your keeper notes to help you with rotational symmetry), Unit 5 Test is Friday, Study session tomorrow at 8:20 am

Enrichment:  Bar graphs were turned in.  Students wrote down their new list of vocabulary about Unit 2 Number Theory in their agenda.  Our study strategy this week is flashcards.  Students used their math resources to write the word and hint on the front and a definition on the back.  Students silently read for their log afterwards.

Math:  We started our Coach Connected Online pretest in order to determine the online assignments we will do to prepare us for the CRCT.

Enrichment:  Stem and Leaf Plot and Line Plot activity was turned in.  We reviewed our vocabulary words for tomorrow's quiz.  We did our computation challenge on subtraction with zeros.  Our big activity was our Cotton Ball Olympics at which we collected data to make a histogram.  We reviewed the parts of a histogram.

HW:  Study your vocabulary - quiz tomorrow, use chapter 6 in your book to see an example of a histogram, find your frequency on the chart and then on the back create a histogram showing the data from our Olympics (make sure to add a title and labels for the axes)

Math:  Today we looked at line symmetry - chapter 8, lesson 11.  We discussed symmetrical versus asymmetrical, how to find a line of symmetry, and how to determine all the lines of symmetry a figure may have.  We watched a power point that showed symmetry in nature, architecture and art.  It also discussed regulary polygons (shapes with sides of equal length) and the fact that if the shape is regular than the number of sides = the number of lines of symmetry.  We practiced problems on p. 466 as well as naming symmetrical letters in our alphabet.  We checked HP p. 73 and reviewed transformations and turned in our transformation drawing.

HW:  None (if you did not turn in your drawing, please do  so tomorrow for a late grade since I am going to count it as a classwork grade)

Enrichment:  Computation challenge: subtraction with zeros.  Topic:  Line plots and Stem and Leaf Plots to go with our review of Unit 1 and its vocabulary. We surveyed our class to collect data.  We recorded it to make a line plot and stem and leaf plot. (chapter 6 in our book)

HW:  Read for log, finish your stem and leaf plot and your line plot using class data, study your vocabulary

Math:  Today we began Unit 5 on Symmetry.  Our focus was transformations which is the movement of a figure without changing its size or shape.  The 3 types of transformations are translations, reflections and rotations.  This information is found in chapter 8, lesson 10.  Keeper notes were given.  We discussed the 3 types as well as finding ways to remember what they are.  To show our understanding we began a drawing that each student created.  The drawing needs to be simple (not incredibly detailed) yet interesting (cartoon type drawings are best). Then students use a template to trace and retrace to draw its reflection, rotation of 90 degrees, and translation (diagonally).

HW:  Finish your transformation drawing and do HP p. 73

Enrichment:  We checked unit rate and percent of a number.   We reviewed how to borrow correctly to subtract when there are zeros (our computation challenge skill for the week) and then practiced this skill.  Students received a new set of vocabulary words for the week on Data Analysis ( a review of Unit 1 for this year).  The study stategy we are incorporating is the "cabinet".

HW:  Finish defining and writing a clue,hint or example for each word on your cabinet (you may use your math book, keeper or any math online resource), study your words for Friday, read for your log
