6th grade Holiday celebration:  1:15-2:25

Math:  We discussed ratio from p. 352 in our book, took notes in our hook book and did a skittle activity to practice.  Unit 4 Tests were returned and reviewed.

HW:  NONE

Enrichment:  We finished volume of geometric solids.  Computation challenge: adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  We learned about the coordinate plane system (Math Book p. 610) and practicing plotting points on a coordinate plane white board.

HW:  Adding and Subtracting Mixed Number Quiz tomorrow

Math:  In our warm-up we applied percent of a number to voting results, our grades, discount, tip and tax. We checked our conversion worksheet.  This worksheet was a GREAT review of all 6 conversions.  I was disappointed that some students did not even finish the worksheet.  We continued by applying percent of a number in our book on p. 393 and 396.  Both these pages have EXCELLENT story problems that could be used to help prepare for the test after the break.  Tomorrow we move on to our last concept - ratio.

HW:  NONE (Please get a folder for math work for 3rd quarter over the break.  Many students are having difficulty keeping up with their worksheets.)

Enrichment:  Computation challenge:  Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers.  We reviewed how to borrow correctly.  Students did improve from yesterday's work on this concept.  Topic:  continue on the Snowman performance task that incorporated problem solving and rational numbers.  Reading logs were calculated.  Grades are in pinnacle.  We continued working on volume of geometric solids. 

HW:  Redo #1,3,5 on volume worksheet if you lost your paper from last week.  Bring to class tomorrow.  Finish your snowman performance task if you did not in class.

Math:  We checked our percent of a number in the real world about tax, tip and discount.  We reviewed how to get tax, tip, discount, final cost and sale price looking at our keeper notes #29.  Students worked in stations on these same concepts.  These concepts can be reviewed at home as well in chapter 7, lessons 9 and 10.

HW:  Conversion HP p. 61.  Some students volunteered to bring in a bag of skittles on Monday for an ratio activity next week.  Thank you!

Enrichment:  Students took their last vocabulary quiz on geometric solids and then their computation challenge quiz on adding and subtracting fractions.  We checked our geometric solid sheet about identifying their parts.

Enrichment:  Computation challenge: add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. Topic:  we identified different parts (face, base, edge, vertex) of 4 solids:  cylinder, cone, prism and pyramid.  Then we began finding the volume of each.  Using water we noticed how the volume of a pyramid relates to the volume of a prism if its base and height are the same.

HW:  Study for your vocabulary quiz and your add/subtract fractions quiz. Reading log is due Monday.

Math:  For our warm-up we found out how to get our percent grade (converting a fraction to a percent).  We checked our percent of a number - HP p. 62 even (convert percent to a decimal or fraction and multiply).  We used estimation to help us know if our answer was correct (or at least in the ball park!).  By using estimation skills, we strengthen our number sense and discovered relationships with our numbers.  We applied percent of a number to voting, tip and record keeping (real life situations) while doing CRCT prep questions.  We used estimation to also eliminate possible multiple choice answers.

HW: Percent of a Number in the Real World worksheet - due Friday (show all work).  If you would still like to order a CRCT Coach Book, the deadline is this Friday.  Get a form from me if you cannot find the one I distributed in November.  The cost is $11.

Math:  Friday we learned how to convert fractions, decimals and percents. Students have keeper notes telling them exactly how to do each conversion.  Today students were given a fraction, decimal and percent to put in order (p. 388 in their math book).  To do this, you must first convert two of the numbers.  You can either decide to make all three numbers decimals or make all three numbers percents and then you can put them in order.  Make sure to follow your directions.  We checked our conversion worksheet from Friday.  We added new keeper notes on how to get a percent of a number.  To do this, we realized we could NOT multiply by the percent.  You must change the percent to a fraction or decimal first and then multiply by the number. (We related our practice problems to real life tip and discount)

HW:  Please use your keeper notes tonight or chapter 7, lesson 9 to help you with Percent of a Number HP p. 62 even

Enrichment: Our vocabulary words this week are about geometry - shapes and solids.  We listed the types of study strategies we have learned this quarter and students were allowed to pick their favorite to define their words. We checked the circumference worksheet.  

HW: Read for your log.  You only have one week left to make sure you have read the equivalency of 7 books (check your log's key to determine how much reading that equals).  Your log is due Monday, Dec. 19th

Math:  Today we began Unit 3B on Rational numbers, focusing on Converting fractions, decimals and percents.  I gave out keeper notes telling exactly how to make each conversion. We practiced each conversion using chapter 7, lesson 8.  Students finished their test or started their homework.  If you did not finish your test, please come in between 8:50 and 9:10.

Enrichment:  Students took their vocabulary and computation challenge quizzes and then worked on circumference of a circle.

Math:  Unit 4 Algebra Test

HW:  None (students who were on the Chorus field trip yesterday need to complete the 8 problems about algebra to make up a classwork grade)

Enrichment:  We had a geometry gallery to share our geometry drawings. We continued with dividing mixed numbers.  Finally we began finding circumference of a circle and discovered the relationship between radius and diameter.

HW:  Study for your vocabulary quiz and dividing mixed numbers quiz.  Both are tomorrow.

Math:  Today we checked and discussed how to write an equation as well as solve it for word problems - PS p. 13 and 14.  We checked our class activity from Monday on solving all 4 types of equations - add, subtract, multiply and divide (found in chapter 2).  Students completed an I-Respond activity on algebra to help them prepare for tomorrow.

HW:  Unit 4 Test is tomorrow.  Reivew: study guide, keeper, ch. 1 (lessons 3 and 4), chapter 2, chapter 7 (lesson 1), Hook Book, parent letter problems and vocabulary

Enrichment:  We reviewed how to multiply mixed numbers for our computation challenge.  We created an animal or cartoon/book character to show our understanding of our geometry vocabulary words.
