LMMS has extended the Food Drive one more day!!! Please bring in donations! Mrs. Lane's homeroom is very close to meeting our 100 item goal!

Math: We discussed ratio, rate and unit rate today (chapter 7, lesson 1).

Enrichment:  Computation challenge:  Multiplying mixed numbers.  Topic:  Symmetry and Transformations

Math:  We reviewed translations once more and checked our Thanksgiving activity before taking our quiz on exponents, order of operations, expressions and translations.

Enrichment:  Our computation challenge is multiplying fractions and mixed numbers this week.  Our topic today was unit rate. We applied this to finding out our hourly wage if we were given our salary and the number of hours worked.

Math:  We reviewed for our quiz tomorrow and worked up to 10 order of operation problems.

Enrichment:  We define vocabulary about symmetry and probability to make a memory (concentration) game.  We silently read for our log.

Math: Our warm-up included subtraction of mixed numbers with regrouping and order of operation with whole numbers and fractions.  We checked HP p. 8 and our book p.24 and 57 on variables and expressions and order of operations for 2 grades. Today we continued Unit 4 by translating words and phrases to mathematical operational symbols and finally to algebraic expressions and equations (Chapter 2, lesson 2).

HW:  Calendar Project that was assigned Monday is due tomorrow for a 25% weighted grade, Translations HP p. 9

Enrichment:  Today we had a really relevant lesson related to real life.  We pretended we went to an ice cream parlor and selected an item or items.  Then to apply percent of a number we found the tax, tip, and discount as well as subtotal, total and sale price.  Students worked on dividing decimals by decimals again and their percent worksheet.

Math:  We focused on evaluating variables and expressions today.  We covered the following vocabulary: operation, expression, equation, variable, substitiute, and evaluate.  We reviewed order of operations and checked HP p. 4 #10-20.  Students practiced adding and subtracting fractions using I-Respond remotes as a review skill and then worked problems in the chapter 1 to practice Unit 4 skills learned this week.

HW:  Calendar Project is due Friday (Please only write 10 expressions - 1 for each date. Also, please follow the guidelines), Variables and Expressions HP p. 8, Textbook p. 24 #14-17 and p. 57 #14-19 (www.my.hrw.com)

Math:  We began by doing a warm-up of order of operation problems. Today we added the fraction bar (which is done last).  Then we discussed how the parentheses causes you to do the operations out of order. Students were challenged on p. 24 in their books to add parentheses to problems to get a certain answer. (Please refer to chapter 1, lesson 4 to help you with your homework. Also use trial and error to help decide where to put your parentheses.)

We played Matho to practice order of operations that included substitution for a variable!

Finally we applied this skill to a story problem about the cost for a family to go to a movie!

Enrichment:  We reviewed our vocabulary with several examples.  We learned how to convert decimals and percents.  Our computation challenge this week is dividing decimals by decimals.  The steps for long divison are estimate, multiply, subtract, compare and bring down.  Graph paper is recommended!

Math:  We did our Monday MMM - timed math fact activity.

We checked HP p. 4 and worked on a downward solving format (solving one part at a time following the order of operations).

We continued trying this format on longer problems than found on HP p. 4.

A CRCT Coach order form was handed out and quizzes were returned.  Please check with your child about the decimal quiz.  The calendar project was explained. Each student is to pick only 10 dates.  The date is the answer and you are creating an expression (number sentence) to get the date on the calendar.  Write only the expression in the box.  Follow the guidelines closely!!!

HW:  Calendar Project is due Friday for a 25% category grade.  Share the CRCT Coach Book order form with your parent

Enrichment:  We defined our new set of vocabulary words on flashcards.  The words are on one side and the definition and example is on the back.  These are words related to algebra.  Students silently read when finished.

6th grade won the Dollar Wars for the United Way donation drive.  Each 6th grader will get a free cookie next week.

A letter about our Holiday Giving Tree is coming home today.

Math:  Today we began Unit 4 Algebra (One-step equations).  We focused on order of operations (chapter 1, lesson 4).  We watched a video, filled in a graphic organizer, glued in and used keeper notes and worked problems using the order of operations. We also used calculators to revisit how to convert a fraction to a repeating decimal and how to write it correctly with bar notation.

HW:  Order of Operations HP p. 4 #1-9 only, buy and bring a glue stick to class every day

Enrichment:  We took our vocabulary quiz on rational numbers, our computation challenge quiz on multiplying decimals and used versatiles to convert fractions and percents.

HW:  Read for your log (You should have the equivalency of 2-3 books by now. Look at the key at the bottom of the log.), finish your conversion sheet if you did not in class

Math:  We talked about how to get and write a repeating decimal for our warm-up.  We took our decimal quiz and then tried 3 problems - converting fractions to repeating decimals for a sticky out the door.

Enrichment: Student volunteered to show how to round decimals to different place values as we checked our worksheet.  We multiplied decimals as our computation challenge.  We discussed how to convert percents to fractions and fractions to percents.

Math:  For our warm-up we played a TIC TAC TOE game in which we reviewed how to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals.

We checked and discussed our decimal study guide, especially our word problems.

HW:  Decimal Quiz tomorrow. Study keeper notes #20-22, study guide (rework problems), chapter 3 (practice more problems especially word problems!)

Enrichment:  Our computation challenge this  week is multiplying decimals.  We also reviewed comparing and ordering decimals to help us with our quiz tomorrow.  Our topic today was rounding decimals. Use the number directly to the right of the place you are rounding to when determining whether to round up or down.
