Happy Halloween! Be safe! Have fun!

Math:  We did our timed math fact activity. Not many people moved on!  Please practice your division facts.  Students were asked to write the steps to adding and subtracting mixed numbers and then multiplying and dividing mixed numbers.  We discussed how to 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 a recipe and how to double, triple, and quadruple a recipe.  Then students enjoyed a Halloween Trail Mix while trying to 1/2 the ingredients or triple the ingredients as well as answer questions about the recipe (great application of our knowledge of fractions and mixed numbers). 

HW:  Please FINISH your recipe activity (front and back) if you did not in class and bring it back tomorrow, Study session 8:20 tomorrow

Enrichment:  Study strategy:  cabinet (foldable), Vocabulary: Number Theory terminology, Topic:  Create a histogram from our music survey and frequency table from last week.

HW:  Read for your log, study your cabinet of vocabulary (quiz Friday)

Starting Monday we return to our regular schedule. Please do not wear a costume to school.  Save it for trick or treating in the evening.

Math: Today we finished our fraction test.

HW:  None :) Have a great fall weekend.  We begin decimals next week.

Enrichment:  Vocabulary and computation challenge quizzes were given. Students worked on finishing their versatile sheets from Wednesday.  When everything was completed, students read silently for their log. We will return to our music survey activity on Monday (please bring back your sheet).

HW:  Read for your log.  Finish your versatile sheet on dividing fractions and mixed numbers if you did not in class.

For Red Ribbon Week:  "Put a cap on drugs!"  You may wear your favorite cap/hat for a $1.00 donation to Relay for Life.

Math:  We took the first half of our fraction test today (30 minute classes). We will take the second half tomorrow.

HW:  Please continue to study:  Keeper notes #13-19, chapter 4 and 5, and your review sheet for the 2nd half of the Fraction Test tomorrow

Enrichment:  We played Flyswatter Math to review our vocabulary.  Students conducted a math survey today.  We will be creating a histogram from our data next week.  Students practiced multiplication and long division one more time.

HW:  Practice multiplication and long division for your quiz tomorrow, study your vocabulary for your quiz tomorrow

Math:  We checked and reviewed multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.  Students worked on a Fraction Review for their test.  I went over the answers and students were supposed to write the correct answers so that they could finish at home tonight and check themselves.

HW:  Fraction Test is tomorrow.  Study session tomorrow at 8:20.  Please finish and check your review sheet.  Review chapter 4 and 5 online.  Study your keeper notes #13-19.

Enrichment:  We reviewed how to divide and get a mixed number or decimal (terminating and repeating) if you have a remainder.  We discussed all the different symbols for multiplying and dividing.  Computation challenge:  multiplying and dividing (long division).  Students used versatiles to practice dividing fractions and mixed numbers for their math test in their math class.

Homework:  Study vocabulary and practice multiplying and long division,Quizzes on Friday

It is Red Ribbon Week (anti-drug awareness):  Tomorrow's theme - Be a "Roll" model - cinnamon rolls will be on sale from 8-9 am for $1.00

Book Fair is open 8-4 through Thursday.

Math:  Today we reviewed and checked the Abracadbra worksheet and HP p. 42 on dividing fractions and mixed numbers.  We covered what a reciprocal is and the steps for dividing.  I gave back the quiz, but we only went over a few problems due to our short classes.

HW:  Multiplication/Division Fractions and Mixed Numbers worksheet, Study session on Thursday at 8:20 (please come in if you struggled on your quiz), Fraction Test is Thursday:  study Keeper notes #13-19 and chapter 4-5

Enrichment:  We reviewed our vocabulary for the week and discussed how to multiplying and dividing whole numbers.

HW:  study vocabulary and read for your log 

I wanted to let you know that I am sorry I will be out of the classroom on Friday and Monday.  I will be walking 60 miles in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure against Breast Cancer. Please think about me this weekend! - Mrs. Lane :)

Math:  We learned a Multiplying Fraction Rap to help us remember the steps and glue this into our keeper.  We checked HP p. 39 and 40 about this topic and practiced multiplying mixed numbers again using our new rap! Groups of 3-4 students played "Kaboom"  to practice these skils!

HW:  Multiply Fractions and Mixed numbers HP p. 41

Enrichment:  We completed a computation challenge for subtractions with zeros and our time measurement conversion worksheet.

HW:  Get syllabus signed if you did not already, Study your vocabulary and subtractions with zeros for your quizzes tomorrow, bring your silent reading book

Math: We covered chapter 5, lessons 6,7,8 on multiplying fractions, whole numbers and mixed numbers. Students received keeper #18 notes and we played MATHO to practice this skill. Students learned how to cross reduce.

HW:  Multiply Fractions HP p. 39 #1-15 and HP p. 40 #1-9

Enrichment:  I distributed and reviewed the syllabus. We reviewed subtraction with zeros and students completed their computation challenge practice.  We began conversion of time measurement.  Please bring back the practice worksheet to finish tomorrow IN CLASS.

HW:  Get Syllabus signed, study vocabulary and practice subtraction with zeros to prepare for Friday's quizzes

Conference week is next week.  Please make sure you have returned your response to your conferencing teacher.  We will have early dismissal every day next week (approximately 2:15 pm)

Book Fair is coming!!! It will be open Oct. 20-28.

Math:  We checked subtracting mixed numbers with borrowing and discussed the process one more time before our quiz.  After the quiz, students used versatiles to continue practicing this multi-step process.

Enrichment:  Today we made a cootie catcher foldable as a study strategy for learning our general math vocabulary.  Every week students will be assigned 10 vocabulary words to define and learn. (This week only has 8 words).  I will show them a different study strategy to use.  A quiz will be given every Friday. 

Also, each week we will practice a basic skill for calculating whole numbers, decimals or fractions. This week we are practicing subtracting with zeros. Please be practicing at home as well.  Students will receive feedback on their practice throughout the week and then take a quiz for a grade on Friday (10 problems).  If a student makes 2 100"s during the week, he/she is exempted from the quiz on Friday and will receive a 100 for their quiz grade.

HW:  Study your vocabulary words, quiz on Friday

Math:  We did our Monday timed math fact activity. We reviewed the steps for adding and subtracting mixed numbers and wrote them on our paper (all students should have these notes in their keeper). We practiced adding and subtracting fractions, whole numbers and mixed numbers and mixed numbers to prepare for our quiz. The quiz from last week was returned.  Ordering fractions was reviewed.  To order fractions, change your fractions to decimals by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Use the equivalent decimals to help you put the fractions in order.

HW:  Quiz tomorrow on adding and subtracting fractions, whole numbers and fractions or mixed numbers and mixed numbers (chapter 5 and keeper 17), complete the Mixed number worksheet to help you with borrowing, Study session tomorrow morning at 8:20

Enrichment:  Students began a new enrichment class today to start the 2nd quarter.  I showed how to record their reading on the reading log and each person received a reading log for the quarter.  We went to the library to check out a book.

HW:  Read for your log

Math:  In our warm-up we applied our knowledge of adding and subtracting mixed numbers to science related word problems.  We are still working on which key words tell us which operation to do to solve.  We checked HP p. 36 and PS p. 36 on this same topic.  Our focus for today was subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping (borrowing) - chapter 5, lesson 4.

HW:  Check your mathathon problems with the answers in the back of the book. Correct your mistakes and have your parents check your work. Collect the money from your sponsors.  Bring the money in on Monday. We will have a quiz on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers next Tuesday.  Study keeper #17 and chapter 5, lessons 2,3,4.

Enrichment:  Students took their last quiz on adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  We did menu math today.  Students used ice cream parlor menus to figure out receipts.  This was a review of decimals and percent of a number (tax).

HW: None (New enrichment classes start on Monday. Students will get a schedule in homeroom on Monday.)
