Math:  Today we took our quiz on data analysis. Then we silently read.

HW:  None

Enrichment:  I showed the class how to go on the school website, scroll to the bottom and click on the 4 links about summer reading.  Please print each one of these out.  You need to have read 2 books (150 pages each).  You need to complete the Book Talk form on one of the books and be ready to present to 4-5 classmates.  You need to complete a summary log on one of the books.

We reviewed adding and subtracting with decimals and completed another practice computation challenge.

As a class we discussed how to make the intervals for the x-axis of a histogram.  Students made a frequency table and histogram about home runs.

HW:  Finish your histogram.  Work on your Summer Reading activities which are due on Sept. 16th

Math:  Today we did an activity with skittles to find the mean, median, mode and range.  We also found out how the mean (average) is affected (changed) when an outlier (a piece of data that is really low or high) is added to the existing data.

We checked our homework about Mean,Median, Mode and Range HP p. 45.

We had a quiz review at the end of class.  The quiz review showed that some students have not been reviewing their keeper notes!!

HW:  Quiz tomorrow. Study keeper notes #1-5 and chapter 6 in your book (you may use your online resources that I showed you on Friday to help you study - watch the tutorials and try the games, quizzes, workbook pages and the chapter review at the end of chapter 6 in the book pages)

Enrichment:  Our basic skill this week for our computation challenges is adding and subtracting decimals.  We talked about how the decimal separates whole from part.  To add or subtract, you must line up the decimals so that the same place values are calculated. We discussed how to correctly add a decimal and zeros so that we can subtract.  Students tried 12 problems.

Our focus today was to create a histogram.  We thoroughly discussed all of the parts as we made it together.  Students will try one on their own this week.

HW:  Summer Reading Book Talk and log are due Sept. 16th (please get this information from the school website) 

Next Monday is a school holiday.

Some students had schedule changes today to try to balance the class sizes.

Math:  We did our MMM - Mad Math Minute. This is a timed activity. In 2 minutes students are trying to correctly complete 50 or more multiplication facts out of 60. Some students did this last week so they moved on to doing the same challenge with division facts.  Please continue to practice your facts.

We checked Rolling out the Stem and Leaf Plot.  We reviewed Stem and Leaf Plot and also discussed mode, median and range.

We glued in 2 sets of notes:  #4 Types of Graphs and #5 Mean, Median and Mode. Homework and Practice workbooks were distributed today.

Focus:  We discussed the steps to find mean (average):  add the numbers and divide by the number of pieces of data,  median (middle number):  put your data in order and find the middle number (if your data has 2 middle numbers - add and divide by 2), mode (which number occurred most often):  you can have no mode, only one mode, or more than one mode, range: subtract highest number minus lowest number.

HW: Mean, Median, Mode HP (Homework and Practice workbook) p. 45, Quiz on Wednesday (study your keeper notes and chapter 6 online)

Enrichment:  We defined 10 words about number theory using the glossary of our math book.  Our study strategy was flashcards.  We discussed what an array was and found the arrays for 12.  The purpose of an array is to visually show the factors of a number.

We silently read for our log.

HW:  Finish defining your vocabulary words if you did not finish in class

Math:  I collected textbook contracts.  We learned how to go on our online resources to be able to see any page in our book, how to print our workbook pages if we leave our workbook at school, and how to watch videos, play interactive games, give ourselves practice quizzes and define our math vocabulary using the glossary.  I strongly encourage you to go online this weekend and try this yourself as well as start getting ready for our first quiz from chapter 6 on data.  The website is http://my.hrw.com username:lostmountain password: a3j3b

We reviewed and corrected our homework:  stem and leaf plot about science quiz grades

We began a new stem and leaf plot activity using dice to gather data.

HW:  Finish the Stem and Leaf Plot worksheet, Quiz next Wed. (chapter 6, study keeper notes)

Enrichment:  We played Flyswatter Math to review our vocabulary.  We took our vocabulary and multiplication/long division quizzes.  Afterwards, we silently read for our log.

HW:  Read and update your reading log.  (Make sure your Summer Reading activites are done by Sept. 16th - go on the school website for details)

Math:  We analyzed bar graphs and line graphs for our warm-up.  We checked Line Graphs PS p. 50 and our CD Sales worksheet. Our focus today was Stem and Leaf Plots.  We took notes in our keeper and created a stem and leaf plot from p. 332 #17.  Please review chapter 6, lesson 9. We will practice Stem and Leaf Plots again tomorrow.

HW:  Make a Stem and Leaf Plot from science quiz scores (small worksheet), look through your textbook and fill out your textbook contract (be specific when listing the book's damages)

Enrichment:  We practiced multiplication and long division.  We discussed how to write our quotient as a mixed number or a repeating decimal.  We also discussed the importance of the placement of our numbers in our quotient.   We collected data on a frequency table with intervals by playing Cotton Ball Olympics.  Tomorrow we will create a histogram from our data.

HW:  Vocabulary Quiz (study your cabinet) and Multiplication/Long Division Quiz (study your computation challenges) tomorrow. 

Math:  I collected signed syllabi.  Please get your syllabus signed by Friday.  A few people need to get another copy from me tomorrow.

We went over our homework and discussed how to make a frequency table with intervals.  The intervals must be the same.  Remember that 0-5 is really an interval of 6, not 5 because you need to count by saying the numbers 0,1,2,3,4,5 not subtracting.  We also reviewed and checked our line plot.  I did not take a grade on this homework assignment. Please keep it in your folder or binder to help you prepare for later assessments.

Today's topic:  Line Graph.  We both analyzed and learned how to create a line graph. We discussed and found the trend, the overall change of the data over time, of example line graphs.

The Problem Solving workbook and Math textbook were issued today (4th period only received their workbook).

HW:  Line Graphs PS (Problem Solving Workbook) p. 50 and finish the CD Sales worksheet (make a line graph and answer the 3 questions)

Enrichment:  I collected the signed syllabi.  Please get your syllabus signed by Friday.

We completed a computation challenge on multiplication and long division.  Students will be bringing home their one from yesterday.

We finished adding definitions and examples or hints to our vocabulary "cabinet".

Math:  We identified the difference between categorical and numerical data and sorted examples in our keeper (#2). We checked our multiplication fact sheet from Friday to see which multiplication facts we need to practice for Monday's MMM (Mad Math Minute - 2 minute drill of facts).  We checked our basic skills pre-assessment to let Mrs. Lane know what are abilities are, so that she may plan for this year's units. Our focus today was the line plot.  We learned that if we have a small range of numerical data, the data would best be displayed on a line plot.  We learned how to create a line plot, glued in keeper notes #3 and added examples.  Some classes were also able to review frequency tables.  This is also in Keeper #3. Please use your keeper tonight to help you with your homework.

HW:  Get Syllabus signed, finish the Think Pair Share worksheet about frequency tables and line plots

Enrichment:  We reviewed how to multiply by 2 and 3 digit numbers and the steps of long division.  We learned how to write our quotient as a decimal or mixed number.  We practiced these skills on today's computation challenge. We began our vocabulary for the week.  Our 10 words were about Data Analysis.  Our study skill was a foldable called a cabinet.  Most students were able to define 4 of the words before the end of class.

Math:  Today we did our first timed multiplication fact activity.  Only four students were able to correctly complete 50+ out of 60.  They will move on to division. Please review your multiplication facts before next Monday!

We covered classroom procedures and briefly covered the syllabus.  Our focus today: the essential parts of a graph, how to identify the scale and interval of a graph, what makes a graph misleading and the difference between numerical and categorical data.

HW:  Open House tonight at 6:30 pm for parents

Enrichment:  Bar graphs were turned in.  We briefly went over our syllabus, what is expected for our book talk and log on Sept. 16th, and how to fill out our reading logs.  Then we went to the media center to check out our first silent reading book.  We will be reading in class every Monday in Enrichment.

Open House will be Monday, August 22 at 6:30.  This event is for our parents to meet their child's teachers by spending about 7-10 minutes in each class.  Please join us first in the theater when you arrive.

Math:  Students completed a multiplication fact sheet (untimed) and a Basic Skills Sheet so that I could see their ability to multiply as well as calculate whole numbers, fractions and decimals.  Neither are a for grade. These are both pre-assessments for the year. 

HW:  None

Enrichment:  We played Vocabulary Tic Tac Toe as a review and then took our vocabulary quiz.  We took our subtraction computation challenge quiz.  We created a bar graph on activities you might do at the beach.  We had to use our time conversion skills to complete this acitivity.

HW:  We go to the Library on Monday to check out our first silent reading book.  Please make sure you know your student number.

Open House for 6th grade is Monday, August 22 at 6:30 pm.  Please report to the Theater upon arrival.

Locker assignments will be postponed to Monday due to problems with setting the combinations. Sorry for the delay.  I know everyone is eager to get one! 

Math:  Today I collected Parent Contact records.  Thank you. We added minimum wage and number of dependents (children) in our house to our data collection sheet so that we can use this data to make a line graph and a line plot during this unit.

Our focus today was to set up two very important books that need to be brought to class every day and used at home to help with your homework and to prepare for assessments:  the Hook Book (math warm-ups) and the Keeper (math notes). Students completed their first Hook (4 questions about data) and set up their keepers. In the Keeper, you should see the guidelines and the first 2 sets of notes.  Starting with Keeper #5, I will be attaching them to the blog.  If you have any computer problems, please write me a note in the agenda.  A few parents indicated this on the parent contact record.

We finished our scavenger hunt on school policy.

Enrichment:  We did a computation challenge on subtraction with zeros and finished our cootie catcher foldable for our general math vocabulary list of 8 words.  We began a bar graph activity.

HW:  Study subtraction with zeros by working problems similar to the ones on computation challenge #1 and 2, study your math vocabulary by using your cootie catcher.  A quiz on each concept will be given tomorrow.
