Lane's Class Updates

Olympic Day for 6th grade is tomorrow.  For Mrs. Lane's homeroom:  wear blue and white.  For all students: wear sunscreen, appropriate PE shorts and shirt, and bring a water bottle.  This event will be outside from 9:20-10:50.

Tuesday and Wednesday are early release days. Dismissal is 12:30

Do not bring bookbags on Wednesday.  Talent show and yearbook signing is Wednesday.  Noone will be allowed to sign another person's shirt or body.  Appropriate school attire on the last day.

Math:  We shared our rotational symmetry performance tasks and turned them in for a classwork grade.  We graded our basic skills review sheet.  Integer balls and rubrics were returned with grades (this was a major assessment grade).  We played integer bingo in which students had to create an integer equation for an answer on their bingo card!

HW:  None

Enrichment:  We won the Chinese lunch made by Mr. Steve, our custodian, for the best students in the lunchroom this quarter!  We completed a computational challenge and did a newspaper activity in which we had to determine how much it would cost to run an ad in the classifieds for 1 day, 3 days, and a month.  We also created our own ad for something we wanted to sell and determined the cost. Reading logs were collected for a grade.

HW:  9 students did not turn in a reading log.  Last day to turn it in for a late grade is tomorrow! (otherwise it is a 50)

Locker Clean-out on Monday and Tuesday.

6th grade Olympic Day is Tuesday from 9:20-10:55.  Bring a water bottle.  Wear your homeroom's country's colors.  Wear appropriate PE dress out clothes. Mrs. Lane's homeroom will represent Greece, so please wear medium blue and white.

6th grade Talent Show is Wednesday from 9:20-10:50. No bookbags on the last day of school.

The last two days, students will be dismissed at 12:30.

You can still order a yearbook for $40.  Get a form from the front office.

Math:  Today we began a rotational symmetry performance task that will be the last classwork grade of the year.  Guidelines and a rubric were given out and discussed.  Students worked on the task for 20-30 minutes today.  Unit 10 Integer Test scores were returned and reviewed.

HW:  Rotational Symmetry Performance Task is due Monday, May 23rd

Enrichment:  Students worked through 4 stations:  Perimeter, Solving equations, Sequences, and Corresponding sides of similar figures.

HW:  Bring in expired grocery coupons, grocery store ads, and newspaper classifieds by Monday, READING LOG IS DUE MONDAY FOR 5% of your grade.(You must read the equivalency of 7 books based on the log's key to get a 100)

Math:  We learned how to use protractors to draw and measure angles to 180, 120, 90, 60, 45 degrees and to subdivide 360 degrees by 1/4,1/3,1/6,and 1/8 to determine degrees of rotation for tomorrow's rotational symmetry performance task which is a review of Unit 5.  We checked our Pi Day problems (a review of geometry from Unit 8).

HW:  None

Enrichment:  We checked our area of parallelograms and triangles worksheet. We reviewed 5 of our math units this year by answering questions dealing with vocabulary.

HW: Bring in expired grocery store coupons, grocery store ads, and the classified section from a real newspaper or from an internet newspaper by Friday, Reading log is due May 23

Math:  I collected textbooks. Students took the Unit 10 Integer Test and then silently read.

Enrichment:  We learned how the area of a parallelogram and a triangle relate to the area of a square or rectangle by cutting shapes and transforming shapes.  We solved problems on area today.

HW:  Finish your area worksheet (front and back), Bring expired coupons, grocery store ads, and classifieds by Friday, Reading log due Monday

Math:  We turned in our Pi Day problems from Friday.  We checked our study guide for a classwork grade and reviewed the rules, vocabulary and the processes for the test.  We played story problem show down (we practiced applying our knowledge to word problems).

HW:  Bring your math textbook to class tomorrow to turn in, Study session is at 8:20 am tomorrow, Integer Test is tomorrow - study: chapter 11 and keeper #41 and 42.  You may want to use your Problem Solving workbook to practice more word problems (chapter 11)

Enrichment:  Students silently read while I worked individually with students on integers and fractions.

HW:  Read for log, Log is due next Monday (5/23), bring in the classifieds, grocery store ads and expired coupons for Friday

We are barcoding our textbooks this year on May 19 and 20.  Mrs. Lane will be collecting her students' math textbooks on May 17th.

Math:  Integer ball projects were turned in today.  We had a great time reviewing degrees, circumference and area of a circle and volume of a cylinder to complete mathematical problems involving round desserts and those we brought from home as we ate PIE and other great DESSERTS for our belated PI Day!  Thank you to all that volunteered and brought items for this event!

HW:  Finish Pi Day problems and study guide - both due on Monday, Integer Test is Tuesday, Study chapter 11 and keeper notes #41 and 42, Study session on Tuesday at 8:20 am, Math textbook needs to be turned in on Tuesday

Enrichment:  We played integer bingo where the students had to create problems for answers on their bingo cards by rolling dice. We also did a review of integers and math vocabulary by playing the game Risky Business.

HW;  Reading Log is due May 23rd.  Only two weekends left to read!  Please bring a book or magazine on Monday to read in class

Enrichment:  We checked our integer story problems and mixed practice and reviewed our rules.  We learned how to play integer bingo by creating problems from dice rolled for the answers on our class card.  Tomorrow we will play with our own dice and card.  We completed the weekly computation challenge.

Math:  Today we continued on our integer ball project.

HW:  Integer Test is May 17th, you will need to turn in your math textbook on May 17th, bring colored pencils, pens, thin markers and a glue stick tomorrow, all make-up work with an "X" in pinnacle needs to be turned in tomorrow (last day)

Enrichment:  We completed a 30 question "Around the World Integer Review" to help prepare us for next week's test in Math.

HW:  Reading log is due May 23rd (equivalent of 7 books are required)

6th grade Talent Show auditions will be after school in the theater until 5:30 on May 10th.  Please sign up with your science teacher.  The Talent Show (no prizes involved) will be on the last day of school during first and second period.

Math:  Today we did our last timed math fact activity.  Please make sure you have your multiplication facts memorized for 7th grade.

We began our Integer Ball Project today.  A guideline sheet was handed out along with the first sheet of 3 panels.  The guidelines were explained.  Crayons were replaced with a ball point pen in the supplies. Thin markers and colored pencils please.  All work written in pencil first.  Students complete 3 panels at a time to be checked during class. Please write the panel number on each panel.  One of each type of problem needs to be done for panels #6-9 ( positive and positive, negative and negative, positive and negative, negative and positive), negative numbers need to be included in the story problems (as well as positive).  The project will be done in class today, tomorrow and Wednesday.  It is due Thursday, May 12th.

HW:  Make-up work is due Wednesday, check pinnacle (any assignment with an "X" only), bring colored pencils and thin markers tomorrow and Wednesday, Study session Tuesday 8:20 am

Enrichment:  Today students read their books or magazine articles for their reading log while I worked with individuals on skills.
