LMMS Fun Run and 5K Race - last day to register to get a FREE t-shirt is tomorrow.  Please fill out the flyer that came home with report cards or go online!  You can still register up to the day of the race but if you want the t-shirt, please register tonight or tomorrow!  April 16 - 8 am to 12 noon (Games, raffle, cake walk and face painting too!)  Help our school raise money to build a track!

Math:  We worked in teams to prepare for tomorrow's test.  We reviewed vocabulary, concepts, formulas and applied our knowledge to story problems.

HW:  Unit 8 Test tomorrow!  Study:  Keeper #38 and 39, your study guide, quiz, HP p. 90, chapter 10, and try word problems from your book or Problem solving workbook

Enrichment:  We answered story problems using geometric formulas. Bring back your conversion sheet tomorrow to finish it in class.

Math:  Today we went over the concepts of the unit on geometric solids and our study guide.

HW:  Unit 8 Test is Friday.  Please study how to work the formulas from Keeper #39, the vocabulary from keeper #38, your study guide, quiz, HP p. 90, worksheets and try some of the story problems from chapter 10 or your PS workbook about solids.

Enrichment:  We checked our metric measurement worksheet.  We reviewed how to convert fractions, decimals and percents.  We practiced this conversion.

HW:  Only read for your log, bring back the conversion sheet to continue in class tomorrow

Math:  Our hook reminded us that a pyramid has side views of triangles and a prism has side views of rectangles or squares.  Because a cylinder has a base of a circle, we find volume by multiplying pi X radius squared X height and NOT length X width X height.

We also found out that when we substitute 3.14 in for pi, we are finding an estimated volume or surface area for our cones and cylinders, but when we leave pi as the symbol, we are finding the exact volume or surface area.

We checked our worksheet on volume of cylinders and cones. We reviewed both formulas and the 4 steps for each.

Today we looked at our last formula:  surface area of a cylinder.  We discussed what each part refers to and took notes in our keeper.  Surface area is the outside covering which is the area of the net of the cylinder.

HW:  Finish the study guide that was handed out Monday.  Do NOT work on the classwork worksheet from today's surface area of a cylinder.  You can do these problems to practice Wednesday or Thursday night.  Continue to study and use your keeper #38 and 39.  Test is Friday.

Enrichment:  Today we got our syllabus for the class to share with our parents.  We went over this. We analyzed another person's art work to find the 25 geometric terms.  Our focus today was a review of metric measurement to prepare for CRCT.

CRCT:  Tuesday, April 12-Monday, April 18th

Math:  We did our weekly timed math fact activity.  Please be working on your multiplication facts or division facts if you have not mastered these yet this year.

We checked HP p. 90 on volume of a cylinder.  #11 on that page is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to review for the test!

Focus today:  Volume of a cone.  Students copied the formula, the explanation of the formula and an example in their keepers. We practiced by beginning our homework.

Study guides were passed out.

HW:  Finish Volume of Cylinders and Cones - due Tuesday.  Study Guide - due Wednesday.  Test on Friday, Study Session tomorrow at 8:20

Enrichment:  Students silently read for their logs while I returned graded work from our first week and met with individuals about our first computation challenge.  After lunch we enjoyed a gallery of geometric art when we moved around the room looking at each others' work. I saw some very creative ideas!

Spring Picture Day: March 28th

Math:  Quizzes were returned and reviewed.  We checked Volume of a pyramid worksheet.  Today we focused on volume of a cylinder.  This is found on p. 576-577 in your textbook.  We added to our keeper notes #39 on Formulas.

HW:  Volume of a cylinder HP p. 90, Unit 8 Test next Friday

Enrichment:  Students are showing their knowledge of 25 geometric terms through creatively through art.  Each term needs to be labeled and the drawing needs to be in color. Each student has a checklist that needs to be stapled to the back of their illustration.

HW:  Finish the geometric drawing. Use your checklist.  Bring in a beach towel labeled with your name. Bring your silent reading book on Monday. Read for your log.

Math:  We reviewed how the volume of a pyramid is 1/3 the volume of a prism to understand how the volume of a pyramid's formula is V=1/3 Bh or V= ( l X w X h)/3.  We added the formula's explanation and and an example to our keeper notes #39.  We discussed how to find the height of a pyramid by going from the middle of the base up to the vertex.  We played 100,000 point pyramid game to practice!

Enrichment: Students had to identify the type of problem for each CRCT Coach problem we did yesterday and then check their answers.  We discussed processes.  The incorrect answers gave me feedback to plan and reviewed the most needed concepts for next week (our last week before the CRCT) to help students prepare.  These  results will also come home with the students tomorrow to help them prepare at home.  Students wrote down websites to use at home.  After lunch groups of students brainstormed choices of geometric vocabulary to illustrate visually and creatively in a drawing tomorrow.  Student examples from prior quarters were shown.

March 28th Spring Picture Day

Register online or get a flyer from the office for our first LMMS Fun Run or 5K Race on April 15th.  Everyone who registers by April 1st will get a t-shirt!

Math:  Students reinforced their knowledge of how to find the surface area and volume of a prism by playing a CUBE game! Then some classes were also able to create stories to find the surface area and volume of a given prism.

HW:  Surface area and volume of a prism worksheet (show all 4 steps!)

Enrichment: Students completed 25 questions on a variety of concepts from this year's curriculum in our CRCT Coach book to give them and me feedback on what still needs to be reviewed in class and at home before CRCT. We will check these problems tomorrow.

Math:  We reviewed and checked surface area of a rectangular prism.  Today we focused on volume of a rectangular prism.  We discussed how the formula was derived, why the answer is in units cubed (units to the 3rd power), and that it refers to the inside space of the solid.  We added an example to our keeper notes and practiced using our homework and practice workbook. Make sure to show all 4 steps!!

HW:  Print out the parent letter for Unit 8 Geometric Solids.  My study session is Thursday this week at 8:20 am.  Our unit 8 test will be next Friday, April 1st.

Math:  We did our Monday timed math fact activity.

Today we focused on how to find the surface area of a rectangular prism.  This is the outside covering of a prism (box) and the answer is expressed in units squared (units to the 2nd power).  Students copied these 4 steps into their keeper for Formulas #39:  1)write the dimensions, 2)formula, 3)substitute, 4)solve using order of operations (parentheses, exponents, multiply or divide, add or subtract). We used cereal boxes that were cut to see the surface area as a net.  Then we discussed how the formula came to be. 

SA= 2(l X w) + 2(l X h) + 2(w X h)

Students completed 3-4 problems in class to use as examples tonight.

HW:  On a separate sheet of paper:  complete the 4 steps above for Surface area worksheet - EVEN problems only

Enrichment:   We went to the library to check out our first book or look for our second book, received our reading log (which was explained) and discussed classroom procedures.

Enrichment:  We corrected our CRCT posttest and indicated the concepts that we need to focus on before CRCT.  This feedback is coming home today.  We checked our geometric illustrations.  Graded work was passed out.
