Please bring back your signed envelope for your progress report if you have not already done so.

Math:  We did our Monday timed math fact activity.  We began Unit 7 today on Direct Variation.  To begin this unit, we need to understand how to locate and graph points on a coordinate plane.  This is from chapter 11, lesson 3.  We took keeper notes from the board (#35).  If you were absent, you need to copy these notes from a friend during homeroom this week.  We practiced using board examples and p. 612 in our textbook while using our coordinate plane white boards.

HW:  Finish Incredible Shrinking Student from before the break - due tomorrow (follow all directions!), Complete Coordinate Plane HP p. 94, Print and keep the parent letter for Unit 7 below.

Enrichment:  We turned in our Coordinate Plane activity (many students did not complete this over the break). Today we reviewed metric and customary measurement using white boards and then took a pop quiz.  We have already covered this topic in both our math and enrichment classes before the break.

HW:  Read for Log (Your log is due Mar. 16th.  You must have 7 books read. See the key at the bottom of the log.)

Math:  Our warm-up was how to use a proportion and scale to determine the drawing distance.  We also learned how to write 7.5 cm as 7 cm 5 mm and how to round 11.375 to the tenths place so that we could Write it as 11 cm 4 mm.

Today we applied scale factor by learning how to use proportions to shrink ourselves.  We measured a partner's dimensions so that they could record their dimensions on a chart.  Then we calculated by a proportion on the back of our instruction sheet to find our drawing dimensions in cm and mm as shown above. We wrote the drawing dimensions on our chart.  Then some of us began the last step:  to use the drawing dimensions to draw a robot looking self on paper.  Remember to color and add the scale.

HW:  Incredible Shrinking student drawing and work is due on Tuesday, Mar. 1st

Enrichment:  We checked our worksheet and reviewed the Coordinate plane.  We began another activity on coordinate plane.  Decimal quizzes were handed back to most students.  A few more students will meet with me on Monday to go over their quiz.

HW:  Read for Log (you should have 5 books read by the end of winter break), finish your coordinate plane activity

Progress reports and information were sent home yesterday.  Please keep the report and information and send back the envelope signed.

Math:  Unit 6 Scale Factor Test was given today.

HW:  Please bring in a map or blueprint if you have one to share with our class.

Enrichment:  We checked our scale drawing worksheet.  Our focus today was the Coordinate plane.  We learned how to determine the coordinates (ordered pair) of a point and how to graph (or plot) points on a coordinate plane.

HW:  Finish the coordinate plane worksheet, read for your log.  Logs will be due the week of Mar. 13th. I will have a more specific date after the break.  You need to have read the equivalency of 7 books (see the key on the bottom of the log)

Progress reports and information is coming home today.  Please keep these and send back the enveloped signed.

Math:  We checked, corrected and reviewed problems on the study guide and checked and reviewed Indirect Measurement on HP p. 58.  Then we continued to work problems requiring proportions.

HW:  Unit 6 Test is tomorrow, Study:  study guide, notes #32,33,34, quiz, and chapter 7, lessons 1-5.  Try more problems on the "motorcycle" worksheet and check with the answers below.

Enrichment:  We practiced solving scale drawing problems using proportions.  We completed computational challenge #6.

HW:  Finish the scale drawing worksheet. Must write proportions or receive no credit.

Progress Reports will come home with students today. Please keep the report and letters.  Please sign and return the envelope to your homeroom teacher.

Math:  The quiz on customary and metric measurement was taken last Monday.  Due to the results, the information was retaught and students were asked to restudy their notes and practice using chapter 7, lesson 4 and 5.  Students were allowed to correct their answers on Thursday.  This quiz was regraded and returned today.  Some students showed improvement while others are still needing assistance from home to get prepared for our test on Thursday.  Please ask to see your child's quiz and go over the concepts using a ruler, their notes and chapter 7.  The study session this morning went over these concepts and I answered questions about conversion today in class.

We checked our stations from yesterday and discussed the height to shadow length type problems: how to set them up and solve.

Today we focused on scale drawings and how to use a proportion to determine scale factor.

HW:  Indirect Measurement HP p. 58 and finish your study guide (cross out #5,7,10,14), Go over quiz and try reworking problems missed, Unit 6 Test is on Thursday

Enrichment:  We checked and discussed proportions and ratios from our CRCT practice yesterday.  Students explained some of the problems on the board.  We worked on a few scale drawing problems as well.

Math:  We did our Monday timed math fact activity!  Please practice your multiplication tables!

We checked Similar Figures HP p. 57 and discussed how you MUST set up a proportion to find a missing side's length and how corresponding angles are EQUAL.  Some students are still not setting up proportions!!

Study guides were handed out.

Indirect Measurement is when you cannot actually measure something so you set up similar triangles with the sun's rays, the height of two objects and their shadow lengths.  You must set up a proportion to solve.  Try using the guide height over shadow length.   We did an example about a giant snowman that was built over 14 days in Maine in 1999.  Then students worked similar problems in stations.  It is best to draw pictures before setting up a proportion.

Enrichment:  We did CRCT practice from our CRCT Coach Book today on Proportions.  We checked our proportion worksheet and handed it in with the scale drawing worksheet

Math:  Our warm-up reviewed similar figures, transformations, and how to use a proportion to determine the length of a missing side.

We checked our classwork from yesterday on identifying congruent and similar figures.  We checked our homework on similar figures and indirect measurement.

We used our keeper notes and visuals on the board to see how corresponding angles of similar figures are equal and how to determine the missing angle measurement without using a protractor.  For a triangle, add the degrees of the given angles and then subtract from 180 degrees.  For a quadrilateral, add the degrees of the given angles and subtract from 360 degrees.  The steps are listed at the bottom of the keeper notes.  This lesson is found in your book, pages 266-369.

HW:  Similar Figures HP p. 57, Unit 6 Test on Scale Factor is next Thursday

Enrichment:  We applied proportions to real life problems and scale drawings.

Math:  We checked proportions HP p. 56 and discussed how to simplify one ratio to help us solve our proportion easily or cross multiply and set up an equation to multiply and divide.

Today's focus was whether two figures were congruent, similar, or neither of these.  Then we looked at embedded similar triangles and figured out how to color code them or separate them before color coding to set up a proportion to solve for the missing side.

Students corrected their quizzes, completed a classwork assignment to check for understanding of congruent and similar and then started their homework on similar figures and indirect measurement.

Enrichment:  We played Proportions Tic Tac Toe and then began a worksheet on proportions.

Math:  We checked our homework: Similar Triangles worksheet

We reviewed how to measure to the fraction of an inch.  We did a white board/desktop review drill on customary and metric conversion.

HW:  Proportions Hp p. 56

Enrichment:  We took a quiz on decimals and completed computation challenge #5 after lunch.

HW:  Read for log ( You should have read the equivalency of 3 and 1/2 books based on the key at the bottom of the log by the time progress reports come out next week)

Math:  For our warm-up we converted time (chapter 9, lesson 5)  Our focus today was to solve for the length of the missing side of a figure by using similar figures and proportions.  Keeper #34 Similar Figures has the 5 steps you should use. We tried several problems in class using a color coding system.  Get these notes from last night's blog or go to chapter 7 in your book.

HW:  Use your notes and your classwork examples to complete a worksheet on similar triangles (6 problems only), go back and study (memorize) customary and metric measurement again tonight, go back and practice using chapter 9, lessons 3 and 4, Quiz corrections will be allowed tomorrow for partial credit back for correct answers on the second try.

Enrichment:  Today we did a desk top drill on decimals.  We received immediate feedback. After lunch we checked our decimals classwork from yesterday and our conversion from Friday.

HW:  Review the rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals and whole numbers.  We will be taking a short quiz tomorrow on this skill.
