Next week is Anti-Bullying Awareness week.  Please wear a red shirt on Monday. A link for forms to report bullying can be found on the school website.

Wednesday, Feb. 4th is an early release day.

Math:  We continued indirect measurement by checking and discussing our homework (PS p. 58) and continuing our work in stations.

HW:  Unit 6 Test next Thursday.  Study guides are due on Wednesday.  Use your keeper, parent letter and online resources as well as this unit's homework assignments as references to help you prepare.

Math:  For indirect measurement:  set up your proportion by comparing height to shadow length (make a guide H over SL).  Then label the top of each ratio (fraction) with the two objects/people being compared.  This will help you place the numbers in the correct spot in your proportion as you read the problem.  A letter needs to be placed in the proportion to indicate what part is unknown.  Then cross multiply and divide to solve.  We will continue working in stations tomorrow to practice this concept.

HW:  Indirect measurement PS p. 58 (use online resources for ch. 7, les. 5 for help)

Math:  We reviewed how lines, rays, line segments, and angles are writtten in math and how to measure an angle in degrees.  While checking our homework, we went back over how to find a missing angle measurement (in degrees) and how to find the missing length measurement (in mm, cm, m, km, in, ft, yd, mi ) using a proportion.  Students also had time to revisit the similar figure and scale drawing stations to finish.  This was a classwork grade.  Most classes began learning how to apply their knowledge of ratios, proportions and similar triangles to indirect measurement problems (chapter 7, lesson 5).

HW:  Indirect Measurement HP p. 58

Math:  We continued working with similar figures.  To find a missing angle of a triangle, add the two angles that are given and subtract from 180 degrees or locate the corresponding angle on the similar figure and the two will be equal.  To find a missing side length, label your figures small and big, color code your corresponding sides (notice the transformation: turn, flip or slide), set up your guide: small to big or big to small, set up your proportion using your guide and then solve by cross multiply and divide. Students completed stations today on this topic.

Math:  We took our mini quiz on order of operations.

We checked and reviewed how to set up and solve proportions to get the solution to a word problem dealing with a comparison (ratio). Writing labels to describe what numbers should go in the numerators and what numbers should go in the denominators is extremely important to setting up your proportion correctly.  A variable (any letter) should be written in the proportion to show what you are trying to solve.  PS workbook p. 56 was taken as a homework grade.  The scale drawing worksheet (with the motorcycle) was taken as a classwork grade.

Students were given the opportunity to look back at the measurement conversion quiz, see the correct answer and ask questions.

We began similar figures today.  Congruent, similar and corresponding sides and angles were new vocabulary words.  Review Chaper 7, lesson 4.  We will continue with this topic on Monday and Tuesday.

HW:  Read and update your reading log.  Reading logs will be a classwork grade in math this quarter. The equivalency of 7 books (check the key at the bottom of the log) needs to read and recorded by March 12.

Math:  We began with another mini lesson on order of operations.  We divided up into groups to go back over all the proportion problems on last night's homework.  One group did an extension activity on more problems dealing with scale drawing.

HW:  Finish the proportion worksheet from last night if needed (this will now be a classwork grade), Complete PS. p. 56 (show proportions), Prepare for your mini quiz on order of operations by studying Keeper #28 and practicing problems from ch. 1, lesson 4

We checked and reviewed customary and metric measurement by going over the problems on p. 530-531 (this was a classwork grade).  Then we took a quiz on these topics.

We began solving word problems using proportions (equal ratios).  Some of them will deal with scale factor.  To set up your proportion:  the first fraction (ratio) is the "scale" (the comparison) and the second fraction (ratio) is what the problem gives you and what you need to find.  For example, if 3 hotdogs cost $1.50 and you wanted to know how much 7 hotdogs cost.  The proportion is 3/1.50 = 7/P (p is the price you are looking for).  Scale drawing example: 1 in. on a drawing= 5 ft. on a real life tree, how tall would you draw the tree if it was really 15 ft. tall.  Proportion:  1/5 = D/15.  Solve for D.

For your homework, you MUST write a proportion for each problem on notebook paper, then solve by cross multiply and divide.  Then write in your answer on your sheet.  All proportions and work MUST be brought to class for credit!!!

HW:  FInish Scale Drawing Worksheet (front and back)- All proportions and calculations must be on notebook paper and brought to class to receive credit.

Math:  We took a mini-quiz on substituting and solving for expressions.  Please continue to work on decimal placement when adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.

We checked every problem of our customary measurement worksheet.  Please use this as a study guide as well as your online resources for p.496-498 and www.myskillstutor.com.

 Customary measurement drawings were collected.

Metric Measurement keeper notes #33 were taken.  Then we practiced converting in metric measurement.   All of the metric system is based on multiples of 10, so you just need to move the decimal place to convert.  Remember to follow the steps in your notes. We will practice again on Tuesday.

Yearbooks on sale for $30 until Jan. 23rd.  After this date, the price will increase.

Jan. 19th is a school holiday.  Jan. 26-30 is conference week and early release every day.

Mrs. Lane's 2nd period:  Bring back your signed conference slip if you have not already done so.

Math:   We practiced substitute and solve with expressions.  Make sure you know your rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals! (study your keeper)

We checked HP p. 77 and discussed how to work backwards through the problem if the blank is written on the first side.  We reviewed the steps of labeling and using the rhymes (check the blog for Jan. 14th) to help us convert.  Also, we discussed and worked problems on what to do if units are skipped, such as cups to gallons rather than cups to pints. For the comparison problems, you must convert one side, so that you are comparing the same unit of measurement.  Go back and rework problems if necessary.

We began a classwork activity using our ruler to draw to the nearest half, fourth, eighth, and sixteenth of an inch.

HW:  Complete the drawing classwork activity and COLOR it, Complete the customary worksheet (front and back), prepare for the mini-quiz on expressions - use your online resources: chapter 2. lesson 1

Math:  We began with 2 expressions to substitute and solve.  Review this at home online with chapter 2, lesson 1 on variables and expressions.  Our mini quiz is on Friday.  Make sure you can calculate using decimals and fractions.  Our focus today was customary measurement and conversion.  After collecting the ruler, we measured a pen and a key to the nearest sixteenth, eighth, fourth, and half inch.  If you need more practice with this, use a ruler at home and measure different lengths.  Have a parent assist you and remember:  every line on a ruler is a sixteenth, every 2 lines is an eighth, every four lines is a fourth, and every 8 lines is a half. Next, we learned two ways to convert:  set up and solve a proportion and by labeling and using the sayings:  1) Big to small, multiply them all  2) Small to big, divide the pig.  This is chapter 9, lesson 3.  We took keeper notes on customary conversion. 

HW:  Customary conversion HP p. 77  ( Be careful if you skip a unit of measurement when converting.  For example, if you are converting from inches to yards, you must remember that 12 in. = 1 ft and 3 ft.=1 yd, so (12X3) 36 in. =1 yd)
